Conical Displacement pushes raised, dimensional cones up through a grid of pieced quilt blocks. The construction method borrows from the sailor's cap and lingerie, its circular panels quilted and gathered to pull flat fabric into a three-dimensional peak, while the resulting form recalls the cone bra popularized by Jean Paul Gaultier and Madonna. The patterns surrounding each cone calls to the same pieced geometry of the traditional wedding ring quilt pattern. The piece holds these references loosely, letting a domestic form carry a quiet undertone of costume.
